Week 1: What a new quarterback actually changes

Auburn has changed quarterbacks while keeping Byrum Brown connected to the coaches and several receivers he knew at South Florida. That gives the Tigers a credible reason to expect early offensive coordination. It also shows why counting returning starters can miss something important.

Our view: familiarity deserves weight when it helps explain a football task, such as identifying pressure or adjusting a route. Production tells us more about the quarterback's ability. Availability determines whether he can do the job now.

Four Week 1 games put those distinctions on the field.

Auburn vs. Baylor: Relationships can travel

The teams meet Saturday, September 5, at 2:30 p.m. CDT at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, a neutral site. Auburn's designated-host status supplies no campus-home advantage. Baylor's game preview and game-week report establish the setting and kickoff.

Brown worked with Alex Golesh and offensive coordinator Joel Gordon at USF beginning in 2023. Auburn's profile credits him with 3,158 passing yards and 1,008 rushing yards in 2025 and notes that several of his receiving targets followed him. We give Auburn the stronger basis for early coordination. Brown and his coaches have already solved problems together, and some receivers have experience interpreting the same decisions.

Baylor has a substantial answer. Its new QB1, DJ Lagway, made 19 starts at Florida. The Bears are replacing their five leading pass catchers and reshaping the offensive line, but experience elsewhere still counts. New defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman also brought three players from Kansas State, giving Baylor some familiar relationships of its own. Those details come from Baylor's preview.

Dave Aranda described his offensive line as the team's most improved position group during camp. That's an encouraging coach assessment awaiting game evidence. Baylor's report of Aranda's comments.

If Baylor contains Brown's running without pulling extra defenders out of coverage, while giving Lagway time to work, Auburn's familiarity could matter less than Baylor's execution. That would weaken our view.

Wake Forest vs. Akron: Recognizing the call is a start

Wake hosts Akron on Thursday, September 3, at 6 p.m. CDT at Allegacy Stadium in Winston-Salem. Akron's official preview.

Gio Lopez's connection with coordinator Rob Ezell makes this transition interesting. They worked together at South Alabama in 2024, before Lopez spent 2025 at North Carolina. In an August Wake profile, Lopez described recognizing the protection checks and plays when he reunited with Ezell, with some terminology changes. That's Lopez's account of his familiarity. We expect that experience to reduce Lopez's learning burden. The rest of the offense still has to arrive at the same answer.

Watch what happens when Akron changes the picture before the snap. Does the protection adjust with Lopez? Does the receiver recognize the same opening? Repeated communication mistakes would undercut the reunion argument even if Wake produces a comfortable result.

UCF vs. Bethune-Cookman: Judge the replacement

UCF hosts Bethune-Cookman at Acrisure Bounce House in Orlando on Thursday, September 3, at 6 p.m. CDT. This is an FBS-FCS matchup. UCF's opener preview.

That preview identifies Alonza Barnett III as QB1 and credits his 2025 James Madison season with 2,806 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, 589 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. A quarterback change brings demonstrated passing and running production here.

Bethune-Cookman has also named a new starter: Florida A&M transfer Tyler Jefferson. Bethune-Cookman's September 2 announcement.

Barnett gives us a positive reason to like UCF's quarterback outlook. Converting that into a large victory margin requires more: enough possessions, sustained execution and favorable field position.

If Jefferson protects the ball and extends drives, UCF could play well without producing a runaway score. Turnovers and repeated short possessions would push the game in the other direction. The quarterback's resume cannot settle those questions by itself.

SMU at Florida State: Familiarity needs availability

SMU visits Florida State on Monday, September 7, at 6:30 p.m. CDT at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. Florida State is at home. ACC Week 1 schedule and FSU's game center.

Kevin Jennings has an established relationship with Rhett Lashlee. On August 10, On3 reported that Lashlee expected Jennings to be ready for the opener after a jammed finger on his throwing hand limited camp work. On3's coach-attributed report.

There was subsequent progress: Yardbarker's August 20 report carried Brett McMurphy's account of Jennings returning to seven-on-seven drills. We have not verified unrestricted game availability as of this article's September 3 check. The later practice report.

That leaves our view of SMU's familiarity advantage conditional on Jennings being able to make the throws the offense requires. A confirmed restriction or a change at quarterback would materially alter it.

Florida State's Ashton Daniels has already made his Seminoles debut, against New Mexico State on August 29. His move into a new offense is no automatic reason to downgrade him. FSU's game report.

Across these games, we'll watch the first adjustment after the opening script: how the offense responds when the defense takes away its preferred answer. That's where a familiar relationship or a capable replacement has to become useful football.
