Make sure you’re comparing the same bet

A spread tells you the handicap and the price tells you what it costs to take it. Those are two separate parts of the same bet, and usually only one of them gets quoted out loud.

Team A at -3 (-110) and Team A at -3 (-125) are the same side of the same game, but the second one costs more to hold. Over a season that gap tends to do more work than most people expect.

College football games land on three more often than any other margin, which makes the half point around a key number worth real attention.

At -3 a three-point win is a push, at -2.5 that same win cashes, and at -3.5 it loses. Nothing about the game changed, only the number you were holding.

A line without a timestamp is incomplete information, because the opener, the number on the screen right now, and the closing number are three different facts about three different moments.

When you compare two lines, check that they came from the same book at the same time. Otherwise you may be comparing a Tuesday number to a Saturday one and calling it movement.

Movement can reflect news, money arriving on one side, a book managing its own risk, or simply a different pricing model, and from the outside those causes look identical.

A moved line is useful context, but on its own it does not explain why the market shifted or what happens next, so it is a reason to go find out rather than a result in itself.
